Fix It BEFORE It Breaks! This is an inexpensive preventative product that greatly reinforces the factory OEM Trunk Latch Handle to PREVENT breakage before it occurs!
The LT is a marvelous example of beauty and engineering at its finest. But like any vehicle ever produced, there are a few fringe areas that could benefit from improvement. One such area of the K1200 LT is the Trunk Latch Handle of the Top Trunk Case. It is failure prone due to a design deficiency.
The major loads within the Trunk Latch Handle are in close proximity. The pivot for the hinge pin is quite close to the hook-shaped arms that drive the acuator links. The hook-shaped arms are connected to the thin material of the curved fascia. It is that transition to the thin region that is the problem. Our Billet Replacement Handle addresses this by connecting the two loads directly with solid material.
It is apparent that the reason for this odd design is due to the die casting tools used. It appears that the hook-shaped arms are hook shaped to allow the mold clearance to form the bosses for the hinge pin. A re-design for the die casting process would likely be very expensive.
Please keep in mind when viewing the photos that this kit can be installed WITHOUT removing the Trunk OR the Latch Assembly! The photos of the Latch Assembly removed are strictly for the purpose of clearly showing the kit's construction and fitting to the Latch Assembly!
LT Trunk Latch decided to investigate the possibility of strengthening the factory-fitted OEM component to fill an obvious demand. There have been discussions of filing and/or polishing the latch hooks and some have written that, "it does not matter what you do, it will still break!". Here are the design objectives:
The strengthening kit MUST be retrofitted without having to disassemble the Latch Assembly! That would entail drilling rivets and spending considerable time and effort.
The kit must be affordibly priced.
To keep the price low, there must be minimal post-processing (sanding, painting, labor intensive) required.
The kit must be compatible with ALL K1200 LT models, INCLUDING the cycles produced after 2005 with the Central Locking System (CLS) option.
The kit must be easily fitted without requiring modifications to the motorcycle.
The design objectives were achieved! Here is the solution:
The design was quite challenging. We recognized 4 strong features within the interior of the plastic mounting bracket and die-cast handle. These features are the mounting locations of the central component of the design, the "FOUNDATION". When the Latch Handle is closed, there is only a small triangular area that is open to provide mechanical access to the hook-shaped arms. The idea was this: "Let's mount the Foundation to the strong points within the Handle, then let's reach up there and GRAB those Hooked Arms with some MIGHTY ANCHORING LINKS!" And that's exacly what we did.
These photos show only the Latch Handle with its Hinge Pin and the Kit. The Latch Assembly has complex parts all over the place in its fully assembled state! AND even far more complex when you see the Latch Assembly with the Central Locking System (CLS) option installed!! And YES, our kit clears all of the complex parts without obstruction, EVEN the CLS! The kit will fit all year model LT's! Shown in this group of photos, you can see the Foundation engaging the Hinge Pin. The Foundation is then pivoted about the Hinge Pin and engages the Latch Hook Studs. After pressing the Foundation into place, the Locking Keys (below right, with the red ink) are installed and pressed into place with the tip of a flat-bladed screwdriver. The foundation is now rigidly locked to the strong points of the Latch Handle.
Below left, you can see the Inner Anchor Link being installed. It should be noted that there is only a small area that can be captured on each end of the 2 Actuator Link Pins. And those Pins can not be removed from the Latch Assembly without removing the Assembly from the Trunk. So the design works with what little IS there! The Anchor Links are quite rigid and do a fine job of "grabbing" the small areas of the Actuator Pins. Below right, you can see the Outer Anchor Link being installed.
We "reached up there and GRABBED it!"
This is what you see with the Latch Handle open, and another view as it is being closed. Your LT friends will be most envious when they see it!
